William Kentridge

Critical Evaluation of the practice of a contemporary artist

William Kentridge is my chosen practitioner for this essay. What drew me into his work was his animated film ‘The Monument’ (1990) in which the main theme is the inherent instability of meaning and the conceit of life. However, its contextual significance provided richer insights into racism, discrimination, inequality, social control and dehumanization. I believe that the world is not turned upside down just on carnival day but is a permanent fixture of life. Thus, in my own work, I explore the timeless disparities in life, the way society creates it and needs it to function.
